U.S.S. Avalon

NCC-93449 Yorktown-Class

Construction and Development

In a few short years, the Federation has become embroiled in a number of conflicts, while the dry docks and repair bases can keep up, Starfleet's top brass has concluded that a mobile repair platform capable of both keeping up with fleets and acting as a fleet element is required.

Rather than construct a whole new platform, starfleet command decided to modify an existing ship. After many discussions, it was decided that the Yorktown class was already a proven modular platform. The U.S.S. Avalon was selected to be the testbed for the project.

Diplomatic facilities were stripped to a bare minimum as well as scientific facilities, more focus was placed on converting former labs and diplomatic lounges in large scale engineering bays, storage facilities, industrial large scale transporters as well as weapon grade industrial replicators.

While the ship boast standard weapon complement of the Yorktown class ship, its defensive capabilities enhanced by multiple redundant shield generators, as well as heavy armored hull allowing the ship to provide cover for damage ships while they evacuate, or while they under repair.

The overhaul was started at the tail end of 2409, and it took 2 years to complete, putting the ship out of action for most of the subsequent conflicts, being brought into action just at the start of the Mirror Borg Incursions.

Primary Function

The U.S.S. Avalon serves as a long-range engineering, operations, and fleet support cruiser intended to provide a mobile repair and logistic center designed to support the fleet during prolonged deployments and to handle repair and logistics support that may be difficult to execute in a shipboard setting

Her primary missions include:

  • Operation, logistics, and fleet support.
  • Large-scale engineering support for colonies, Starbases, and damaged vessels

The Avalon is built on a modified Yorktown class hull, where the vast majority of science labs and diplomatic facilities were replaced with industrial replicators, fabrication bays, and large-scale storage bays designed to store spare parts that are too energy costly to manufacture on board a normal starship. The Ship is equipped with large-scale industrial replicators and high-precision tractor beam emitters. The ships shuttle bays were modified to carry extended complement of work bees, runabouts and Sphinx work pods to facilitate rapid deployment of repair teams and engineering crews.

Maiden Voyage

The U.S.S. Avalon embarked on its first mission at the end of 2411 under the command of Captain Thryiss Ozosi, to test out the ship's enhanced defensive capabilities in the starship proving yards at Tau Ceti. The ships baptism by fire came when upon its return trip to ESD, Avalon received distress call from USS Eisenhorn, a ship damaged by freak coronal ejection, suffering multiple hull breaches and loosing one of its warp nacelles and  drifting dead in space, Avalon's enhanced engineering bays, and work bee compliment allowed the criticaly damaged vessel to be repaired enough to be able to fly to nearest Starbase with Avalon escorting to provide any further assistance if neccesary.
